What are Vitamins?

Vitamins are organics compounds that people need in small quantities. Most Vitamins need to come from food because the body either does not produce them or produces little.

Vitamins work hard to keep our bodies functioning properly. They also convert food into energy and repair cellular damage and help the body function effectively.

There are 13 Essential Vitamins;

1.Vitamins A

2.Vitamins C

3. Vitamins D

4. Vitamins E

5. Vitamins K

6. Vitamins B Complex( Thiamine B1, Riboflavin B2, Niacin B3, Pantothenic acid, biotin, Vitamins B6, Vitamins B12 and folate.


There are two types of vitamins

* Fat- Soluble Vitamins are vitamins A, D,E &K. They are present in foods containing fats, the body absorbs these vitamins as it does dietary fats. They do not dissolve in water and are stored in the body for a long period of time and they are found in mainly plant and animal foods and in dietary supplement.

* Water - Soluble Vitamins include Vitamins C and Vitamins B complex. It plays a role in maintaining heart function and a healthy nervous system, the body needs water soluble vitamins in frequent small doses.

They are needed daily by the body. Water-soluble vitamins are carried to the body's tissues but are not stored in the body, they are found in many plant and animal foods


Sources of Vitamins

1. Vitamins A_ Carrots, sweet potatoes, Spinach and Kale

2. Vitamins E- Nuts,seeds, Vegetable Oils 

3. Vitamins B12- Meat, fish and Poultry


Disease caused by deficiency of Vitamins are; Aneamia, Scurvy,Rickets, Badskin and Retarded growth.


Benefits

1. Vitamins allow our body to grow and develop and also keep our bodies in good working order

2. It is important for metabolism and antioxidants that promotes healthy teeth and gums

3. Vitamins A protects eyes from night blindness.

Therefore vitamins are considered essential nutrients because acting in concert,they perform hundreds of roles in the body.
