ESCHERICHIA COLI
Escherichia coli (E-coli) are a large and diverse group of bacteria that is commonly found in the intestine of human and mammals. Most Escherichia coli do not cause harm but some that are harmful pathogens such as E-coli 0157:H7 can make people sick. These pathogens are transmitted to human primarily through consumption of contaminated drinking water and food such as raw vegetables and undercooked meat.
SYMPTOMS OF ESCHERICHIA COLI INFECTION
1. Diarrhea
2. Abdominal cramping
3. Nausea
4. Vomiting
5. Pale skin
6. Dehydration and loss of fluids
7. Kidney failure
8. Seizures
9. Fever
10. Loss of appetite
Common causes of Escherichia coli infection include:
1. Drinking contaminated water such as lake, swimming pool and ponds
2. Eating contaminated food which include juice, cheese, undercooked meat, or raw vegetables
3. Drinking untreated milk
4. Contact with a person who has a poor hygiene and doesn't wash their hands regularly
5. Contact with an infected animals
To prevent Escherichia coli, the following are necessary;
1. Do not drinks from untreated rivers, streams, or well
2. Keep the kitchen clean
3. Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before eating, after handling food, animal and after using the toilet.
4. Cook all meat thoroughly
5. Store foods and drinks properly
6. Washing vegetables, especially the leafy green ones
7. Drinking pasteurized milk, apple juice and cider rather than unpasteurized.
8. Clean and sanitize cutting boards and utensils before and after using it
It is known that most strains of Escherichia coli bacteria are harmless and even help keep your digestive tract healthy. "But some can make you sick or cause a life threatening kidney problem". Wash your food and cook them thoroughly so you won't get the harmful effect of Escherichia coli (E-coli).
