ARE CARBS A NEEDED NUTRIENTS?

Carbohydrates contain carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atom. Carbohydrates are essential part of a healthy diet and are necessary for a healthy body. They provide many important benefits. In the world of nutrition, this component is one of the most disputed contexts.

Over the years, carbohydrates have gotten a bad reputation. Some associated to rapid weight loss that can be easily attached to someone trying to lose weight. When you eat carbs, your body breaks it down into simple sugars, which are absorbed into the blood stream. As sugar level rises in your body, the pancrease releases a hormone called insulin which is needed to move sugars from the blood into cells where the sugars can be used as a source of energy.

By not taking the amounts of carbohydrate you need, then you are turning your body into a fat burning machine. However, when you limit carbohydrates, you deprive your body of a main source of fuel and the essential nutrients you need to stay healthy.

Most of the carbohydrates in the foods you eat are digested and broken down into glucose before entering the blood stream. Glucose in the blood is taken up into your body cells used to produce a fuel molecule called adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Cells can use the ATP to power a variety of metabolic tasks.

Most cells in the body can produce ATP from several sources which include dietary carbohydrates and fats. But if you are consuming a diet with a mix of these nutrient, most of your body cell walls prefer to use carbs as their primary energy source.

Those who eat the most carbohydrates especially from natural sources as beans, wholegrain, and vegetables have a lower risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes and heart disease. The nutrients found in whole grains include essential fatty acids, the vitamin B, vitamin E, zinc, folate and magnesium. Whole grains also have fibre.

Vegetables contain many vitamins and minerals as well as phytonutrients. Some believe eating fewer carbohydrates is the way to optimal health, while others prefer higher carbs diets. No matter where you fall, it hard to deny that carbohydrates play an important role in the human body.

“Carbs are a needed nutrients because they are the main source of energy which helps us fuel our brain, heart muscles, and keep our blood cholesterol levels in check.”
